Deciduous shrub or small tree, up to 4 m tall, sometimes scrambling or climbing. Bark grey to brownish, often cracking and peeling; branchlets at opposite right angles or even bending backwards, occasionally spine-tipped near the base. Leaves opposite and often clustered at the ends of side branches, obovate to elliptic, up to 8.5 × 3.5 cm, softly velvety, particularly below; petiole 2-4 mm long; stipules hairy. Flowers in axillary and terminal heads, creamy-white. Fruit almost round, fleshy, c. 7 mm in diameter, crowned with the remains of the calyx, forming a conspicuous, whitish hairy ring.
