Leaves very long and 1-3.5 mm wide, rough on the lower surface and dull green or greyish-green. Ligules are absent, but leaf sheaths have extensions that are covered in very fine spines. Found in moister areas, such as drainage lines, gullies, river flats, forests and open sheltered slopes; especially where fertility is reasonably high. Highly frost tolerant. Native biodiversity. Provides shelter for wildlife and is valuable for preventing soil erosion along gully lines. Has a high growth rate, but even new growth is only ever of moderate feed value. New growth that has been burnt or kept short is more readily grazed. Becomes more abundant under set stocking as mature plants have a mass of old leafy material and are not palatable to stock.
