The metallic ringtail (Austrolestes cingulatus) is an Australian damselfly in the family Lestidae,[3][4] It is widely distributed in Tasmania, Victoria and eastern New South Wales.[5] It is a thin, medium-sized damselfly with a green and gold or bluish green and gold coloration. Each abdominal segment is marked by a pale "ring"; this, combined with its glossy metallic coloration, give it its common name of metallic ringtail.
It is active through October to March in still-water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps, and alpine bogs, being usually found amongst vegetation.

De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1839 door Burmeister.

En medelstor, fint byggd smaragdflickslända med grönaktiga till guldaktiga och blågröna färger. På varje bakkroppssegment finns närmast basen en ljus ring, förutom hos de tre yttersta. Honan är något mer robust byggd än hanen, men könen är annars relativt lika till utseendet.
Denna trollslända finns i Australien och är vitt spridd i delstaterna Victoria och New South Wales och i sydöstra Queensland, samt på Tasmanien.
Flygperioden för arten varar från oktober till mars. Förekommer vid kanten av lugna vatten, som sjöar, dammar och våtmarker, i områden med låga kullar eller i mer kuperade bergstrakter.
