The truffle Kjeldsenia aureispora was named in honor of SOMA (SOnoma Mycological Association) co-founder, Dr. Chris Kjeldsen. It is an unusual genus that has a white outside peridium that stains yellow then turns reddish brown upon handling. It is placed in the family Cortinariaceae and is thought to be close to Hymenogaster. This is a photo of the holotype that was collected on Hwy 20 in Mendocino County, CA and published by one of Dr. Kjeldsen’s former students, Dr. Wes Colgan III.
