(7 feet), Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. Substratum: hummus among beach pebbles.Place: Adriatic Sea region; island Olib; Slatinica bay, west Zadar archipelago, Zadar region, Croatia. Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Geranium purpureum): Most of more than 60 species of the genus Geranium have beautiful flowers. Some are tiny, but all one should do is to look at them at close. Such is also Geranium purpureum. This species is a Mediterranean floral element and is native to all countries surrounding Mediterranean Sea. Nowadays it is introduced also to several other countries. The species is very similar to much more common Robert's geranium (Geranium robertianum), so much that in some regions, it is almost impossible to distinguish both taxa. Several authors (for example Ref.3) treat Geranium purpureum on subspecies level as Geranium robertianum ssp. purpureum. This find is in one respect - size - unusual. Usually Geranium purpureus grows from 20 to 30 cm tall (Ref. 3) but these plants were about five times smaller. Probably due to the habitat, which is extremely nutrition poor. Also, presence of salt in the air and/or in the ground may cause such small habitus of the plants. The presence of this taxon on island Olib was confirmed in 2016 (Ref.4).Ref.: (1) T.
