The Western New Guinea stream turtle or New Guinea snapping turtle (Elseya novaeguineae) is a species of freshwater turtle in the Chelidae family. It is found in the Bird's Head Peninsula and the Bomberai Peninsula west of Cenderawasih Bay, and on the island of Waigeo of West Papua, Indonesia.^[5]

Taxonomy

This species was recently moved from Elseya to Myuchelys by Georges and Thomson (2010);^[6] however, this was later deemed in error by the authors and was argued against by Rhodin et al., (2010)^[7] with the support of the authors. Hence it has been returned to Elseya. The species Elseya schultzei has also long been seen as synonymous with this species; however, recent studies have shown this to be incorrect. Therefore, that species was recently removed from synonymy, further revision of the New Guinea Elseya the species has been made type species for a new subgenus (Hanwarachelys) which also contains Elseya schultzei and Elseya rhodini.^[4]

Elseya novaeguineae est une espèce de tortue de la famille des Chelidae^[1].

Répartition

Cette espèce est endémique de Nouvelle-Guinée. Elle se rencontre en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée et en Indonésie^[1]. Elle a été introduite aux Palaos et à Malaita aux Salomon.

Étymologie

Cette espèce est nommée en référence au lieu de sa découverte, la Nouvelle-Guinée.

Taksonomi

Pada mulanya, spesies ini dimasukkan ke dalam senarai Elseya ke Myuchelys oleh Georges dan Thomson (2010);^[5] tetapi, dibantah oleh Rhodin et al., (2010) ^[6], dan ia dikembalikan semula ke dalam senarai Elseya. Spesies Elseya schultzei juga dianggap sinonim dengan spesies ini; bagaimanapun, kajian terkini menunjukkan terdapat percanggahan. Oleh itu, spesies ini kemudian dipindahkan dari senarai sinonim, dan semakan selanjutnya dilakukan terhadap Elseya New Guinea, menjadikan spesies ini ialah spesies tip bagi subgenus terbaharu, iaitu (Hanwarachelys) yang di dalamnya mengandungi spesies Elseya schultzei dan Elseya rhodini.^[4]

Herpetologie

Elseya novaeguineae is een schildpad uit de familie slangenhalsschildpadden (Chelidae).^[1] De soort werd voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven door Adolf Bernhard Meyer in 1874. Oorspronkelijk werd de schildpad beschreven als Platemys novae-guineae. De soort behoorde lange tijd tot het geslacht Myuchelys waardoor soms verschillende wetenschappelijke namen worden gebruikt.

Elseya novaeguineae bereikt een maximale schildlengte tot 30 centimeter. De kleur van het schild is bruin, de kop en poten zijn grijs van kleur.^[2] De soort is endemisch in Nieuw-Guinea, hieraan is ook de soortaanduiding novaeguineae te danken. De habitat bestaat uit rivieren en moerassen. De schildpad is vooral langs de kust te vinden.

Опис

Загальна довжина карапаксу досягає 30 см. Голова середнього розміру. Шия помірної довжини. Панцир опуклий. Краї панцира — зубчаті. На підборідді присутні 2 шкірястих вирости. Кінцівки наділені плавальними перетинками.

Верхня частина голови коричнева з карими очима, нижня — жовтувата. Карапакс рівного коричневого кольору, пластрон жовтуватого забарвлення. Шкіра монотонна червонувато-коричневого кольору.

Спосіб життя

Полюбляє ріки та болота на узбережжі. Харчується рибою, креветками, молюсками, безхребетними, мишами.

Самиця відкладає 14 великих яєць еліпсоїдної форми (55x33 мм). Розмір новонароджених черепашат 35—48 мм. Вони мають карапакс коричневого кольору з маленькою чорною плямою на кожному щитку.

Розповсюдження

Мешкає на о.Нова Гвінея.
