Erythroxylon squamatum Sw. Prodr. 75. 1788
A tree or large shrub. Leaves elliptic to obovate-elliptic, rather firm in texture, 5-14 cm. long, 6 cm. wide or less, abruptly acuminate at the apex, narrowed at the base, the midvein prominent, the lateral veins diverging from it at a very wide angle ; petioles 4-7 mm. long ; stipules ovate, acute, 2-4 mm. long, persistent on the twigs ; pedicels clustered in the axils, slender, angled, longer than the petiole, in fruit 1.3-2 cm. long; calyx cleft to about the middle, 1.5 mm. long, its lobes ovate, abruptly acute ; petals oblong, obtuse, 3.5-5 mm. long, the ligule about one third as long as the blade ; drupes narrowly oblong, obtusely angled, blunt-pointed, 1.5-2 cm. long, about 8 mm. thick.
Type locality : West Indies.
DISTRIBUTION: Montserrat and Guadeloupe to Grenada, Trinidad, and Guiana; reported from Cuba.
