Otatea acuminata (Syn.: Arundinaria acuminata Munro, Yushania acuminata (Munro) McClure) ist eine Bambus-Art in der Gattung Trauerbambus (Otatea).
Otatea acuminata ist eine neotropische, horstbildende Bambus-Art, die an Riesen-Schachtelhalme erinnert. Sie bildet kurze Rhizome. Die Laubblätter sind bis zu 30 cm lang und 0,5 cm breit. Die Zweige sind stark herabhängend. Die Halme sind überhängend, haben Durchmesser von 2 bis 4 cm, werden 2 bis 4 m hoch (in Mexiko bis 10 m).
Der Name Otatea stammt von Otate, der Bezeichnung für Bambus auf Nahuatl (Aztekisch). acuminata bedeutet „lang zugespitzt“.
Die Art stammt aus dem westlichen Mexiko und lebt dort in Höhenlagen von 500 bis 1600 m NN in Trockenwäldern zusammen mit Eichen, Akazien und Weißgummibäumen. Sie kommt aber auch in Honduras und in Costa Rica vor.[1]
Otatea acuminata ist nicht winterhart und braucht Temperaturen über 5 °C. Er verträgt aber trockene und auch leicht kalkhaltige Standorte. Diese Bambus-Art wächst ungeschützt in Europa in mediterranem Klima.
In Mexiko dienen die Halme zur Erzeugung von Körben, Spazierstöcken und Besenstielen.

Otatea acuminata and its cultivars are cultivated as an ornamental plant, often planted in subtropical and temperate climate gardens in full or partial sun. The plant is drought tolerant when established, but benefits from periodic watering and feeding. Mexican Weeping Bamboo is easily grown in pots, reaching around 6 feet (1.8 m) tall. When planted in the ground it can reach 15 feet (4.6 m) or more with regular water.
Mexican Weeping Bamboo is easy to propagate by dividing the root ball with a sharp spade. A particularly delicate look can be achieved by thinning the culms so that they are spaced 1 foot (0.30 m) or more apart. This allows dappled light to pass through the Mexican Weeping Bamboo, and the plant will sway gracefully in a gentle breeze.
Otatea acuminata is a fast-growing clumping bamboo which can spread 1–2 feet (0.30–0.61 m) in each direction yearly. It is well suited to the climate and soil in Southern California, and can be successfully grown and propagated with minimal effort. Unlike many other bamboo species, the leaves do not brown at the tips even under suboptimal growing conditions.

Ce sont des bambous à rhizomes courts, pachymorphes, aux tiges (chaumes) dressées pouvant atteindre 10 mètres de long. C'est une espèce cultivée comme plante ornementale.
Cette espèce était initialement nommée Arthrostylidium longifolium. En 1973, Floyd McClure l'a renommée Yushania aztecorum. En 1980, Soderstrom l'a d'abord appelée Otatea aztecorum puis Otatea acuminata. Finalement, Guzman, Anaya & Santana, de l'université de Guadalajara (Mexique), décrivirent deux sous-espèces en 1984 :
