Males of this small species of dart frogs attain a snout-vent length of 19.8 mm, females 22.1 mm. The discs on the fingers and toes are expanded; Finger I is longer than Finger II; Finger III is not swollen in males. Lateral fringes are absent on the fingers and toes. An outer tarsal fold is absent; webbing is basal between Toes III and IV and absent between other toes. Pale dorsolateral stripes are absent, but silver oblique lateral stripes and white ventrolateral stripes are present. The dorsum is pale brown, and the flanks are dark brown; oblique lateral line brilliant silver; the dorsal surfaces of the thighs are cream, and the posterior surfaces of the thighs and inner surfaces of the shanks are orange. A white mark on either side of the cloacal opening extends onto the posterior surface of the thigh. The inguinal region is orange in males. The throat and chest are cream, and the abdomen is bright silver; the iris is bronze. A median lingual process is absent, and the testes are white (Morales and Schulte 1993).Originally described as Colostethus argyrogaster, in 2017 the species was assigned to Leucostethus by Grant et al (2017).

This small species is known only from northern Peru, where it occurs in the western part of the Amazon Basin just to the east of the Cordillera Central, and in the middle Río Marañón Valley near the northern end of the Cordillera Central. The known localities are at elevations of 500–650 m in partially cut-over lowland humid tropical forest and dry forest.
