ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION.—Hoyle, 1885:226.

TYPE LOCALITY.—Australia, New South Wales, off Two-fold Bay (36°59′S, 150°20′E), 150 fm (275 m), green mud bottom.

TYPES.—Lectotype: BMNH 1889.4.24.31.–32, 1 female, 19 mm ML.

Paralectotype: BMNH, same lot as lectotype, 1 male, 11 mm ML.

Specimens in good condition, preserved in ethyl alcohol.

Octopus superciliosus (commonly the frilled pygmy octopus)[1] is a species of octopus.[2] It was first described in 1832 by Jean René Constant Quoy and Joseph Paul Gaimard[3] based on a specimen found off Victoria during the 1826 to 1829 voyage of the Astrolabe.[4]

Description

O. superciliosus is described as a pygmy species.[5] It is small, with a mantle length of up to 26 millimeters and a total length of up to 94 millimeters. It is white and cream to light brown, with an egg-shaped mantle and large eyes.[4]

Distribution

O. superciliosus is found in southeastern Australia, ranging from the central Great Australian Bight to Twofold Bay in New South Wales.[6] It in an inshore species,[4] with recorded depths from zero to 69 meters.[5] O. superciliosus lives in sandy or mud bottoms, or among sponges or polyzoans.[4]

Life cycle

Female O. superciliosus lay large eggs, around 8-11 millimeters in length.[4] Clutch sizes are unknown, but estimated at 50 to 100 eggs. Hatchlings are benthic and 4 to 5 millimeters in length.[6]

Octopus superciliosus is een soort in de taxonomische indeling van de inktvissen, een klasse dieren die tot de stam der weekdieren (Mollusca) behoort. De inktvis komt enkel in zout water voor en is in staat om van kleur te veranderen. Hij beweegt zich voort door water in zijn mantel te pompen en het er via de sifon weer krachtig uit te persen. De inktvis is een carnivoor en zijn voedsel bestaat voornamelijk uit vis, krabben, kreeften en weekdieren die ze met de zuignappen op hun grijparmen vangen.

De inktvis komt uit het geslacht Octopus en behoort tot de familie Octopodidae. Octopus superciliosus werd in 1832 beschreven door Quoy & Gaimard.[1]
