Zanthoxylum purpusii Brand. Univ. Calif. Publ Bot. 3: 381. 1909.
An intricately branched thorny shrub 1-2 m. high, with a grayish bark ; branches sparsely armed with straight prickles 5-7 mm. long, which are compressed at the base; leaves odd-pinnate, 2-3 cm. long, terminating short branches, the petioles and rachis tomentose ; leaflets 5 or 7, cuneate, the lateral ones 5-10 mm. long, 3-5 mm. broad, the terminal somewhat longer and broader, all rounded and often emarginate at the apex, rounded or cuneate at the base, crenulate, sessile, pubescent on both surfaces ; inflorescence cymose-pauiculate, 1-1.5 cm. long, the branches tomentose ; pedicels short ; specimen in immature fruit.
Type locality : Vicinity of San Luis Tultitlanapa, Puebla.
Distribution: Known only from the type locality.
