Artemisia tilesii has a bewildering array of variation in leaf and inflorescence morphology that has been separated into four infraspecific taxa recognized in some floras. I am unable to separate these taxa consistently and am including them within a broad circumscription of the species.

Perennials, 20–60(–80) cm, mildly aromatic (rhizomes coarse). Stems 1–3, erect, white, tomentose (on distal branches, hairs appressed) or glabrate. Leaves basal and cauline, bicolor (white and green); blades (basal) linear to broadly lanceolate, 3–7(–10) × 2–5(–6) cm, coarsely pinnately lobed (cauline becoming linear distally), faces tomentose (abaxial) or glabrous (adaxial). Heads in compact to broadly branched, paniculiform arrays 1–20 × 2–6 cm. Involucres broadly campanulate, 4–5 × 3.5–4 mm. Phyllaries (violet-brown) oval (outer) to elliptic or lanceolate, sparsely tomentose. Florets: pistillate 9; bisexual 25–60; corollas yellow, 1.5–3 mm, glabrous (style branches included, erect, linear, relatively short, short-ciliate). Cypselae oblong-linear (angular), 1.2–1.5 mm, glabrous. 2n = 18, 36.

A stout perennial, with a rootstock; stem 2-4 dm. high, floccose when young, striate, often purplish; leaves sessile, ovate in outline, 5-10 cm. long, acuminate, pirmatifid, sparingly floccose when young but soon glabrate above, white-tomentose beneath; divisions 3-5, linearlanceolate, acuminate, or in var. arctica obtuse, often again cleft or toothed; heads nodding, sessile, in a dense short spike-like panicle, sometimes spicate; involucre hemispheric, about 4 mm. high, 6-S mm. broad; bracts 10-12, in 3 series, fuscous, with brown scarious margins, nearly glabrous, the outer ovate, acute, only slightly shorter than the inner; inner bracts oval, acute; ray-flowers 10-12; corollas 2.5 mm. long; disk-flowers 25-40; corollas purplishbrown, rarely yellowish, funnelform, 2.5 mm. long; achenes fully 1.5 mm. long.

A tall perennial; stem probably 1 m. high, glabrate, angled and striate; leaves numerous, green and glabrous above, white-tomentose beneath, the lower stem-leaves bipinnately cleft, 1 cm. long or more, the upper ones pinnately divided or some in the inflorescence entire; primary divisions mostly 5, in the lower leaves cleft into lanceolate divisions, in the upper ones entire, linear-lanceolate, acuminate; heads numerous in a leafy panicle, mostly nodding; involucre hemispheric, about 5 mm. high and fidly that broad, sparingly tomentose; bracts about 15, light-green and scarious-margined, ovate or oval, the inner obtuse, the outer acute and shorter; ray-flowers about 10; corollas 2 mm. long; disk-flowers 25-50, fertile; corollas 3 mm. long, purplish; achenes 1.5 mm. long.

A tall pereimial, with a rootstock; stem 3-6 dm. high, sparingly floccose when young, soon glabrate, striate; leaves lanceolate or ovate in outline, glabrate above, densely whitetomentose beneath, the upper entire, the lower deeph' cleft into 3-7 lanceolate often falcate divisions; heads numerous in Verjdense elongate panicles, mostly erect; involucre campanulate, about 4 mm. high and 3 mm. broad, more or less tomentose; bracts about 12, in about 3 series, the outer ones ovate, half as long as the innermost ; inner bracts elliptic, obtuse, scariousmargined, yellow; ray-flowers 5 or 6; corollas 2 mm. long; disk-flowers 5 or 6, fertile; corollas nearly 3 mm. long; achenes 1.5 mm. long.

Artemisia tilesii is an Asian and North American species of flowering plant in the aster family. Its common names include Tilesius' wormwood,[3] Aleutian mugwort,[4] and stinkweed.[5] It is native to Russia, Japan, and northern North America (from Alaska, east as far as Quebec + Nunavut and south to Nevada).[4][6][7]
Description
Artemisia tilesii is a perennial herb growing from a tough rhizome. It produces one to three stems up to 80 centimeters in maximum height. The stems may be white with a coating of woolly hairs. The leaves and inflorescences are quite variable, and the species is sometimes divided into several subtaxa based on these differences. The leaves are often bicolored white and green with the distribution of hairs on the surfaces. The inflorescence may be small and compact or wide, open, and branching. Each bell shaped flower head is about half a centimeter long and lined with purplish phyllaries. It contains many yellow flowers.[8]
The plant is aromatic, with a scent that inspired the common name "stinkweed" but is considered agreeable to some people.[5] It can be mild[8] or strong enough to overpower the smell of fish.[5]
In experiments, simulated acid rain droplets were neutralized by the leaves of the plant, possibly due to the presence of various cations such as calcium.[9]
Uses
The cultivar 'Caiggluk' was developed in Alaska for use in revegetation and erosion control. It tolerates a range of soil pH and can grow on waste land made toxic by mining operations. It is easy to grow and attractive. Caiggluk is the Yupik name for the wild plant.[5] Sargiġruaq or Salgiġruaq is the Iñupiaq name for the plant.
Artemisia tilesii has a number of historical uses in the traditional medicine systems of Alaska Native peoples. It has been used to treat fever, infection, tumors, arthritis and other joint pains, bleeding, congestion, and tuberculosis, and as a laxative and general tonic.[10] Native American Ethnobotany. Native Alaskans also used A. tilesii as a deodorizer after the preparation of fish. It was used in steambaths and sweat lodges. They chewed it with tobacco and ate the roots with seal oil.[10]
