Body is brown and gray (usually green, Ref. 48635), becoming lighter ventrally, with scattered irregular dark spots. Often there are two dark bands below the eye, one at the lower rim or the opercle and one at the corner of the mouth. The fins are generally light or translucent; the caudal fin is light and dark striped.

體極延長而呈長橢圓形。吻長而尖，吻上緣與上頜間的角度為50°-65°。眼間隔微凸或平坦。眼大，位於近於頭背側。口端位；兩頜具犬齒及絨毛狀齒，後方側齒呈犬齒狀；上頜骨上緣平滑或稍呈鋸齒狀。頰部無鱗；胸鰭基部內側不具鱗；側線鱗數45-47；側線上鱗列數4.5；側線下鱗列數13-14。背鰭單一，不具深刻，具硬棘X，軟條9，第IV棘最長；臀鰭硬棘III，軟條8，第1軟條通常最長，但等於或短於軟條部之基底長；胸鰭軟條13；尾鰭分叉，兩葉先端尖型。體灰色至褐色，體腹面銀白，體側散佈許多不規則斑駁；眼下通常有二條暗帶，一條延伸至口角，一條延伸至前鰓蓋下枝；另有一暗帶位於眼間隔。各鰭淡色或透明。以前所記載之長身龍占(/Lethrinus
semicinctus/)為本種之誤鑑。

Lethrinus variegatus és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels letrínids.[4]
Descripció
- Pot arribar a fer 20 cm de llargària màxima.
- 10 espines i 9 radis tous a l'aleta dorsal i 3 espines i 8 radis tous a l'anal.
- El cos és marró i gris (més clar a la zona ventral), amb taques fosques irregulars i disperses.
- Presenta sovint dues bandes fosques a sota de l'ull.
- Les aletes són generalment translúcides. L'aleta caudal té franges clares i fosques.[5][6]
Reproducció
És hermafrodita.[7]
Alimentació
Menja petits invertebrats bentònics.[8]
Hàbitat
És un peix marí, associat als esculls[9] i de clima tropical (30°N-25°S) que viu fins als 150 m de fondària.[5]
Distribució geogràfica
Es troba des del mar Roig[10] i l'Àfrica Oriental[11][12][13][14] fins a les illes Ryukyu,[15] Nova Caledònia i Tonga.[16][5][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45]
Longevitat
La seua esperança de vida és de 15 anys.[46]
Observacions
És inofensiu per als humans i la carn dels exemplars més grossos és ben apreciada com a aliment.[5]

二名法 Lethrinus variegatusCuvier et Valenciennes, 1830[1] 杂色裸颊鲷（学名：Lethrinus variegatus）为輻鰭魚綱鱸形目鱸亞目龍占魚科裸颊鲷属的鱼类。分布于印度洋非洲东岸至太平洋波利尼西亚群岛、台湾岛以及西沙群岛等，棲息深度可達150公尺，本魚身體是棕色和灰色，有散在的不規則的黑斑，體側具兩個深色的條紋，背鰭硬棘10枚，背鰭軟條9枚，臀鰭硬棘3枚，臀鰭軟條8枚，體長可達20公分，棲息在珊瑚礁附近的沙底質海域、海草床，屬肉食性，以無脊椎動物為食，可做為食用魚。[1]
