Body deep; total scutes 29 to 32. Vertical striae on scales overlapping or sometimes continuous at center of scale, numerous small perforations on hind part of scale. Closely resembles S. hualiensis which has dark dorsal and caudal fin tips. Differs from other deep-bodied species chiefly in its lower gill raker count and presence of a dark spot at dorsal fin of origin.

體長橢圓形而側扁，體高較高，體長為體高的2.82-3.17倍。背，腹緣淺弧形。頭中等大，頭頂平坦光滑。吻短，吻長小於眼徑。眼中等大，除瞳孔外大部分被脂眼瞼覆蓋。口前位，下頜稍長於上頜，上頜延伸至眼前部下方。上下頜無齒，腭骨和舌上有細齒。鰓蓋膜不與峽部相連。鰓耙細長，下枝鰓耙數48-67。體被薄圓鱗，鱗片溝交叉或連續；腹部具稜鱗18+13-14。尾鰭無匕首狀大鱗。背鰭位於體中部稍前方；臀鰭位體後下方，最後2鰭條稍大；腹鰭始於背鰭第8個鰭條的下方；尾鰭叉型。背部深綠色，腹部白色；口周圍和瞳孔上部虹膜為灰黑色。背鰭淡青褐色，前面1-6鰭條的基部黑色，鰭條上部黑色；尾鰭淺黃綠色，末端黑色；胸、腹、臀鰭淡青黃色。

高體小沙丁魚（学名：Sardinella brachysoma），又名沙丁魚、扁仔、扁鰮、高體小沙丁、青鱗仔，為輻鰭魚綱鲱形目鲱科的其中一種，分布於印度西太平洋區，包括馬達加斯加、印度、孟加拉、緬甸、安達曼群島、泰國、中國、香港、台灣、菲律賓、印尼、巴布亞紐幾內亞、澳洲等海域，棲息深度可達50公尺，體長可達13公分，棲息在沿海海域的迴游性魚類，成群活動，可做為食用魚。
