Nanomia bijuga, a siphonophore, is most abundant in the Monterey Bay during what is known as the Oceanic period (Bruce et al. 1998). The Oceanic period occurs three months after seasonal upwelling events. Added nutrients to the water column instigates a spike in many species' populations, including Nanomia bijuga. Nanomia bijuga is pelagic, and spends the majority of its life at 200m-400m (Bruce et al. 1998). These measurements have been made available via ROV. Nanomia bijuga has been found to correlate to the deep scattering layer at witnessed in the San Diego Trough (Barham 1963).
