The Philippine dwarf kingfisher (Ceyx melanurus) is a species of bird in the family Alcedinidae that is endemic to the Philippines found in the islands of Luzon, Polillo Islands, Catanduanes, Basilan, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao. Its natural habitat is tropical moist lowland forests.[2] But it is threatened by habitat loss.
The Philippine dwarf kingfisher is a small mostly orange kingfisher with a red beak and legs, and a white belly. It has a light lilac hue which is more intense in the southern subspecies and has dark blue spotted wings for the northern subspecies.[3][2]
The Philippine kingfisher was formally described by the German naturalist Johann Jakob Kaup in 1848 under the binomial name Alcedo melanura.[4][5] The specific epithet is from the Ancient Greek melanouros meaning "with a black tail".[6] The Philippine dwarf kingfisher is now placed in the genus Ceyx that was introduced by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacépède in 1799.[7][8]
Three subspecies are recognised:[8]
The subspecies C. m. mindanensis is sometimes treated as a separate species, the south Philippine dwarf kingfisher (Ceyx mindanensis), with the nominate and samarensis classified by the Handbook of the Birds of the World as the north Philippine dwarf kingfisher.[9] The two proposed species are differentiated by color and size: north Philippine dwarf kingfishers have dark blue spotted wings and ears and are slightly smaller than south Philippine dwarf kingfishers, which have a more noticeable lilac hue and are overall more uniform orange.
In March 2020 a fledgling of the C. m. mindanensis subspecies was photographed for the first time by the Robert S. Kennedy Conservation Society led by Miguel David De Leon in Cagayan de Oro.[10]
It is found in lowland primary and secondary forest up to 750 meters above sea level. It prefers areas with high rainfall.
The IUCN Red List follows the Handbook of the Birds of the World thus assesses the North and South subspecies separately. Both species or subspecies have been assessed as vulnerable with the population believed to be on the decline. The Southern subspecies has a lower estimated population of 2,500 to 9,999 mature individuals with the Northern subspecies estimated at 10,000 - 19,999. This species' main threat is habitat loss with wholesale clearance of forest habitats as a result of logging, agricultural conversion and mining activities occurring within the range.
There are currently no targeted conservation plans for the species. It occurs in a few protected areas throughout its range like the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, Bataan National Park, Samar Island Natural Park, Mount Kitanglad National Park but protection and enforcement from loggers and hunters is still lax.[11][12][2]

De Filipijnse dwergijsvogel (Ceyx melanurus) is een ijsvogel die alleen voorkomt in de Filipijnen. De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd als Alcedo melanura gepubliceerd door Johann Jakob Kaup in 1848.
De Filipijnse dwergijsvogel is de kleinste bosdwergijsvogel in de Filipijnen. De drie ondersoorten zijn te onderscheiden door de grootte en een aanwezigheid of afwezighed van een blauwe plek in de nek. C. m. melanurus is de kleinste ondersoort. De andere twee zijn te onderscheiden doordat bij C. m. mindanensis de genoemde blauwe plek ontbreekt, in tegenstelling tot C. m. samarensis. Ook C. m. melanurus heeft overigens deze blauwe plek in de nek.
De Filipijnse dwergijsvogel is voor een groot deel roodbruin. Een plek in de nek achter de oren is wit en afhankelijk van de ondersoort zit daarboven een blauwe plek. De vleugels zijn zwart met helder blauwe plekken aan de bovenzijde. De staart is aan het einde ook zwart en de hals en de buik zijn wit. De snavel is bij volwassen exemplaren oranjerood. De ogen zijn donkerbruin en de poten oranjerood.
Deze soort wordt inclusief staart zo'n 12 tot 13 centimeter groot en heeft een vleugellengte van 5 tot 6 centimeter.

De bosdwergijsvogel komt alleen of in paartjes voor oerwouden en bossen tot een hoogte van ongeveer 750 meter boven zeeniveau. Daar zijn ze in tegenstelling tot veel andere ijsvogelsoorten niet te vinden in de buurt van stromend zoetwater, maar in de bossen tot een hoogte van zo'n vijf meter boven de grond.
Deze vogels paren gewoonlijk in april en mei. Van het nest en de eieren is niets bekend.

필리핀 난쟁이 물총새는 1848년 독일의 박물학자 요한 야콥 카프가 이명법에 따라 Alcedo melanura로 공식적으로 기술했다.[2][3] 구체적인 표현은 "검은 꼬리를 가진"이라는 뜻의 고대 그리스어 melanouros로부터 유래되었다.[4] 필리핀 난쟁이 물총새는 1799년 프랑스의 박물학자 베르나르제르멩 드 라세페드에 의해 도입된 케익스속에 속한다.[5][6]

아종 C. m. mindanensis는 때때로 별도의 종인 필리핀 남부 난쟁이 물총새(Ceyx mindanensis)로 취급된다.[7]
2020년 3월, 아종 C. m. mindanensis의 어린 새가 처음으로 사진에 찍혔다. 필리핀 현지 생물학자인 마이클 데이비드 드 레온은 10년 동안 들판에서 이 새의 사진을 찍었다.[8]
