Adult morphology Females 35-39 mm from snout to vent. Males considerably smaller, 25-28 mm, rarelly more. Build elongate, narrow except in females distended by masses of eggs. Body long. Hindlimb short, the adpressed tibio-tarsal articulation reaching the eye in females with eggs or slightly beyond it (smaller specimens). Head large, length and width subequal. Snout flat above, slightly pointed beyond the nostrils, sloping down slightly to the mouth opening in profile. Canthus rostralis curved, loreal region grooved below the canthus. Nostrils small, opening upward. Eye prominent, slightly longer than its distance from the nostril. Interorbital space slightly wider than the internarial space. Tongue wide, rounded, slightly notched and free behind, Vomerine teeth in two small, slightly oblique groups, close together, between the choanae. Disk wide, short, spatulate, Fingers free. Toes about one-half webbed; a narrow fringe of web on the inner side of the first, second, and third toes; web wide to above the penultimate subarticular tubercle on the outer side of the second and third, slightly longer on fifth, not reaching the penultimate tubercle on fourth toe, thence fringed. A small tubercle under the first finger; a slightly larger bifid one under the third and fourth; a small inner and a minute outer metatarsal tubercle. Skin of the dorsal aspect and the sides smooth; minute glandules disseminated on the head, especially on the upper eyelids, the supratympanic ridge, and the interocular spot, forming a row clown the stripes. Ventral aspect of the body and midventral portion of the thigh granular. Coloration and pattern: Dorsal, aspect medium brown, much lighter than the pattern. This is longitudinal and composed of a dark subcanthal stripe, an oblique bar from the eye to the edge of the mouth, a large, triangular interocular spot, a pair of dorsolateral stripes, and additional stripes on the sides. Sacral spot generally indistinct; often a faint longitudinal pattern on the middorsal area. Variation In most specimens the interocular spot is obtriangular, generally blunt; in some individuals it is pointed; sometimes it is asymmetrical or bifid at the tip. The dorsolateral stripes may converge anteriorly or run straight to the sacral region where they are deflected onto the flanks; there they and the lateral stripes may become somewhat anastomosed; dark spots are also present on the flanks. Some specimens show a smallish irregular excentric spot or shadow on the sacral area or one or two dots on the midline of the back. The dorsolateral stripes are sometimes fragmented; in one specimen the fragments are oblique. Two individuals show a light halo around the interocular spot and the stripes. Wide, perpendicular, a oblique coincident bars are present on all the permanently visible upper parts of the limbs, with light, slightly ornate intervals between them. The dark bars are variable in width; in a few individuals they coalesce at the back. The edges of the pattern may be very marked when viewed from beneath Flash color of the hidden surfaces a dull grayish violet. A sprinkling of dark pigment or dark vermiculation present on the ventral aspect. Iris a light brownish pink at the periphery, pale, Yellow at the center, with thin zig-zag black veins, a narrow black pseudocolobom, and a small median notch in the lower part of the free inner rim. Larval morphology Body oval in dorsal view, slightly wider than deep; snout broadly rounded in dorsal outline; nostril nearer eye than tip of snout; distance between nares 72% interorbital width; nares rounded and dorsal: eye dorsolateral, 14% body length; opening of the sinistral spiracle directed posterodorsally on the midline about 73% body length; anal tube short and dextral; tail slightly higher than body: dorsal fin origin on body-tail juncture: dorsal and ventral fins arched: tail musculature reaching the pointed tail tip; mouth anteroventral. Width equal to 43% body width: a single row of oral papillae shortly interrupted anteriorly and some inner scattered papillae on lateral parts: tooth row formula 2(2)/ 3; beak moderately developed and finely serrated. Coloration: Body brown: fins and tail musculature brownish marbled.
