Vexillum taeniatum, common name: the ribboned mitre, is a species of small sea snail, marine gastropod mollusk in the family Costellariidae, the ribbed miters.[1]
The shell size varies between 38 mm and 85 mm.
The narrow, fusiform shell has a high spire. The shoulders are sharply rounded below the suture. The shell is axially ribbed with ten ribs on the body whorl. These are crossed by spiral cords that become weak on the middle of the body whorl. The interior of the outer lip is lirate. The columella has five plaits. The siphonal canal is extended and recurved.
The shell is yellowish or orange, with a broad white central band, partly visible on the spire and is bordered with narrow chocolate bands. There are one or two additional chocolate bands below, sometimes replaced by a single broad one next below the white. [2]
This species occurs in the Indian Ocean off Madagascar and in the Pacific Ocean off the Philippines, Indonesia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and in the Gulf of Thailand.

Vexillum (Vexillum) taeniatum is een slakkensoort uit de familie van de Costellariidae.[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1811 door Lamarck.

Vexillum taeniatum atinge quase de 10 centímetros de comprimento quando desenvolvida.[4] Concha estreita, fusiforme, com espiral em alta torre. Axialmente com nervuras e costelas sobre sua superfície. Columela com cerca de cinco pregas. Canal sifonal recurvado. Superfície da concha com áreas de coloração branca e com três faixas em tom de laranja; uma abaixo da sutura da espiral, uma central e uma na base da concha, as duas últimas só visíveis na última volta e todas com fortes linhas pretas; porém com ou sem uma linha vermelha estreita através da área branca. As faixas aparecem no lábio da abertura da concha, de interior creme.[3]
Os moluscos do gênero Vexillum são caramujos carnívoros e predadores.[5] A família Costellariidae está intimamente relacionada com a família Mitridae (cuja espécie tipo é Mitra mitra) e os estilos de vida desses moluscos são semelhantes. Mitra e Vexillum foram colocadas em suas próprias famílias por causa de diferenças na anatomia e alimentação. No entanto, tal como acontece com os Mitridae, os Vexillum (Costellariidae) inserem sua probóscide profundamente para raspar fora os tecidos moles de sua presa com sua rádula.[6] Vexillum taeniatum é encontrado em águas rasas.[7]
Esta espécie é encontrada na região do Indo-Pacífico, abrangendo leste da África, Japão, Vietnã, Tailândia, Indonésia, Filipinas, Nova Guiné e a Grande Barreira de Coral de Queensland, na Austrália.[3][4][8]
