Erica johnstoniana Britten

johnstonii: after Sir Henry (Harry) Hamilton Johnston (1858-1927), British administrator and explorer, who collected flora and fauna specimens in many parts of Africa. His best known discovery likely is the okapi, which he first found.

Erect branched subshrub, 20-200 cm tall. Branches densely pubescent with short simple hairs and longer, stout hairs. Leaves in whorls of 4, 3.5-8.5 mm long, with stout simple hairs. Flowers in 8-16 flowered clusters, terminal on the side branchlets, bracts, pedicels and calyx covered in stout hairs. Corolla ovoid, pink with darker purple tops, 4-7 mm long, minutely pubescent with ciliate margins. Style 2.5-6 mm long, more or less equalling the corolla.

Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
