Pileus spongy-fleshy, fibrous, sessile, dimidiate to fiabelliform, often narrowly attachedusually imbricate, somewhat laterally connate, 4-6X5-10X0.5-1 cm:; surface hairytomentose to setose-hispid, grayish-tawny to ferruginous, azonate, smooth, anoderm, becoming somewhat glabrous and subzonate with age ; margin acute, sterile pallid' entire: context tawny-ferruginous, subzonate, 2-3 mm. thick; tubes 3-5 mm. lono-^ brownish-ferruginous within, mouths angular to irregular, 3-4 to a mm., edges acute' +

Type locality : New York.
Habitat : Dead trunks or decayed spots in living trunks of beech, maple and other deciduous trees.
Distribution : Maine to Alabama and west to Missouri.

Inonotus cuticularis is a species of fungus in the family Hymenochaetaceae. A plant pathogen, it has a circumpolar distribution, and is found in the temperate zone from eastern U.S. and Canada to Japan, China, Russia and south to central Europe.
