These free-living polychaetes have eighteen pairs of overlapping scales. Sometimes they live commensally in the tubes of other polychaetes or in moon snail shells occupied by hermit crabs.

These worms live in clusters of calcified tubes. Each worm has up to 11 pairs of branchial filaments. Photographed at 20 m depth.

Mating individuals

This polychaete worm was dredged up from a depth of 60 m. and photographed in the laboratory.

This is the extruded, jelly mass of fertilized eggs of the lug worm. The worm remains buried in the sand. 15 m depth.
