With eight genera (Eurolophosaurus, Microlophus, Plica,Stenocercus, Strobilurus, Tropidurus, Uracentron, and Uranoscodon) this family's species are present in the most of tropical and subtropical South America and the Galápagos. In terms of diversity, they generally compromise a most diverse group of Lacertilia, being able to live in a wide range of habitats, since forests to deserts.
