They are native to Norway, Yugoslavia, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Belarus, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Greece, Russia, Romania, Hungary, Estonia, Kyrgyzstan, Albania, Poland, Georgia, Czech Republic, Finland, Afghanistan, Belgium, Austria, Azerbaijan, Iran, Eastern North America, Tajikistan, Armenia, Lithuania, Germany, and Latvia. They have simple, broad leaves and green flowers. Flowers are visited by Chalcosyrphus nemorum, Portevinia maculata, Epistrophe nitidicollis, and Leucozona lucorum. Individuals can grow to 20 m.
