They are native to Bahia, Pará, Paraná, Sergipe, ParaíBa, Maranhao, Amazônia, Mata Atlântica, Santa Catarina, Acre (Brazil), GoiáS, Cerrado, Rio De Janeiro, Mato Grosso Do Sul, Mato Grosso, U.S. Virgin Islands, SãO Paulo, Piauí, Ceará, The Contiguous United States, Minas Gerais, Distrito Federal, Espirito Santo, Rio Grande Do Sul, Roraima, Tocantins, Caatinga, RondôNia, Puerto Rico, Alagoas, Amapá, and Pernambuco. They have simple, broad leaves. Flowers are visited by Halictonomia clidemiae. Individuals can grow to 4.6 m.
