Identification
provided by World Register of Marine Species
Dall (1919:347) adds the following note underneath the description: "This was regarded as a new species of Mesalia by Doctor Carpenter but I have always had some (perhaps unwanted) suspicion that the shell is exotic". The holotype was examined by A. Warén (30/05/1991) and considered to be Mesalia varia Kiener, 1843 (= Mesalia mesal (Deshayes, 1843)) from western Africa (fide Warén, unpublished MS preserved at NRM, Stockholm). As the synonymy has not yet been published, the taxon is here maintained as accepted until the time of publication.
