A small tree, 5-S m. tall ; leaves 3-5-foliolate, petioled, the leaflets obovate-oblong to elliptic-oblong or elliptic, sometimes ovate, the terminal one 5-20 cm. long, the lateral usually considerably smaller, acute to acuminate at the apex, more or less inequilateral at the base and decurrent on the petiolules, pellucid-punctate, entire or irregularly crenulate ; flowers fragrant, 3-5.5 cm. broad, the exterior sepals ovate to oval, 4-5 mm. long, the interior ones broadly ovate to orbicular, 5-6.5 mm. long ; petals oval to nearly orbicular, sometimes broadly obovate, 1.4-2.5 cm. long, puberulent ; ovary velutinous ; capsule subglobose ; seed oblong, the testa brown.
Type locality : On the mountains of Santa Cruz, Jamaica. Distribution : Jamaica, southern Mexico, and Guatemala.
