Frangula alnus (Alder Buckthorn) is a species of shrub in the family Rhamnaceae. They have a self-supporting growth form. They are native to Poland, Algeria, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, Lithuania, China, Finland, Yugoslavia, United Kingdom, Turkey, Ukraine, Estonia, Moldova, Spain, Georgia, Ireland, Germany, Iraq, Bulgaria, Morocco, Switzerland, Latvia, Austria, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, France, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Russia, Romania, Iran, Norway, Sweden, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Portugal, Belarus, Greece, Syria, Hungary, and Belgium. They have simple, broad leaves. Flowers are visited by Vespula consobrina. Individuals can grow to 3.5 m.
