2010-08-25 Vienna XXII. district (Lobau brownlands, 155 m AMSL).Flower and fruit; here on Solidago gigantea (subsp. serotina): an untypical host.I've found some who died on Solidago before they could flower and fruit: so obviously it isn't too vital on Solidago, but it can survive there.German name: Nessel-Teufelszwirn (-Seide)

2011-10-09 Vienna XXII. district, Lobau - Danube National Park (155 msm Quadrant 7864/2).German name: Nessel-Teufelszwirn, Nessel-Seide; Riesen-Goldrute
Solidago is a new-found host of
Cuscuta which prefers native
Urtica (and a few other species); last year I found that
Cuscuta is not as vital on
Solidago as it is on
Urtica (it only bore few fruit on the former), and the same was true this year - only that this year's growth of
Cuscuta was much richer, and it reached fruiting stage on many
Soldiago plants too - like on this one here.

Trichostema lanatumwoolly bluecurls. A beautiful shrub for the garden. Roots must be kept dry. Replant frequently from cuttings (seeds are difficult) as the shrub is short-lived. One garden book suggests planting with matilja poppies and bush poppies for a stunning display. The spikes will enliven any vase of cut flowers. Or. you could leave it in the ground, few flowers look better in the cross-lighting of morning or evening sun. A David Douglas collection. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.

Erose Mussaenda is a climbing shrub with golden yellow flowers. The "snow flakes" are metamorphosed leaves. The golden yellow corolla is an attractive pentagram. The apical cymous inflorescence is also very pretty. Vine and root of this plant can be used to treat diseases like Cold, Bronchitis, Enteritis, Pharyngitis, Tonsilltitis, Nephritis, metrorrhagia etc.. This photo was captured alongside a nature trail on Sai San, Tsing Yi, Hong Kong.

Please note that the 'White leaves' of this plant is in fact lobed sepals that rest just beneath the golden flowers. The golden flowers though small yet very eye-catching and graceful under the sun. This plant is easily mix-up with Erose Mussaenda (Mussaenda erosa) where as Splash-of-white has soft hair at the back of its leaves. This photo was taken by the side of the hill at the back of Mayfair Garden, Tsing Yi, Hong Kong.

[tentative ID] Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum, in the Ericaceae) has simple, alternate leaves, oval in shape and tapering abruptly at the tip. The edges are entire (smooth and toothless) and the petioles (stems) are short. Leaves turn bright red in the autumn, so the shrub makes a wonderful, native ornamental with edible fruit as a bonus. This particular shrub was growing along the Life of the Forest Trail in Assateague Island National Seashore, MD, at 12:59 pm EST [camera EXIF off by one hour].
