Es troba al Pacífic:[6][7] des d'Austràlia[8][9][10][11][12][13] (el Territori del Nord i Austràlia Occidental)[14][15] i l'extrem sud-oest de les illes Filipines[16] (el mar de Sulu[17][18] i les illes Calamianes)[19][20] fins a les illes Salomó,[21][22] incloent-hi Malàisia,[23][21][24] Indonèsia,[25][26][27][28] Papua Nova Guinea[29][30] (incloent-hi les badies de Milne[31] i de Kimbe),[32] Nova Caledònia,[8][33] el mar de Cèlebes[18][17] i, possiblement també, el mar de la Xina Meridional.[34][35][36][37][38][5][39]

Die Weißstreifen-Aalgrundel wird bis etwa 45 cm lang, das einzige bekannte adulte Exemplar von Pholidichthys anguis war ein 24,5 cm langes Weibchen. Der Körper ist schuppenlos und aalartig langgestreckt. Das breite Maul reicht bis zu einem Punkt unterhalb des Augenhinterrandes. Die Kieferzähne sind konisch und zugespitzt. Gaumenzähne fehlen. Auf jeder Kopfseite besitzen die Fische nur eine einzelne Nasenöffnung. Die Kiemenöffnungen sind groß und berühren sich unten vor dem Kiemendeckel. Alle Flossenstrahlen sind segmentiert, Stacheln fehlen. Die kurz hinter dem Kiemendeckel beginnende Rückenflosse und die Afterflosse sind lang und mit der Schwanzflosse zu einem durchgehenden Flossensaum zusammengewachsen.
Beide Arten zeigen einen deutlichen Dimorphismus zwischen Jungfischen und ausgewachsenen Tieren. Junge Pholidichthys anguis sind hell, der Bauch weiß und zeigen einen dunklen Nadelstreifen an den Körperseiten. Jungfische von P. leucotaenia sind schwarz, mit einem auffallenden bläulich-weißen Längsstreifen an den Flanken und einem weißen Bauch. Adulte Tiere sind schwärzlich mit russigen Flecken (P. anguis) oder unregelmäßigen gelben Bändern (P. leucotaenia). Die Seitenlinie ist nicht oder kaum zu sehen, besteht aus winzigen Grubenorganen und beginnt vorn hoch am Körper um hinter den Brustflossen zur Seitenmittellinie abzufallen.
Adulte Pholidichthys leben sehr versteckt, entweder in Höhlen und Spalten in Korallenriffen oder in Gängen im schlammigen Meeresboden. Sie sind wahrscheinlich weitgehend nachtaktiv. Die Jungfische leben in Schwärmen.
Die systematische Stellung der Gattung war lange Zeit umstritten, da die Tiere sowohl Merkmale der Grundeln als auch der Schleimfische besitzen.[1] Die Unsicherheit in der systematischen Zuordnung wird auch beim englischen Namen deutlich, wo die Gattung entweder als Engineer gobys oder Convict Blennys bezeichnet wird. In der Vergangenheit wurde Pholidichthys auch den Wurmgrundeln (Microdesmidae) zugeordnet, mit Notograptus verglichen oder in die Verwandtschaft der Lippfische (Labridae) gestellt.
Springer und Freihofer (1976)[2] stellten sehr genaue Untersuchungen zu Skelett und Nervensystem an, um die Verwandtschaft zu klären – es kam aber nur heraus, dass wenig für die Schleimfischartigen (Blennioidei) spricht. Auch eine Untersuchung der Molekularbiologen Matt Craig und Leo Smith ergab eine Verwandtschaft mit den Schleimfischartigen und den Kieferfischen (Opistognathidae). Es konnte keine Verwandtschaft mit den Grundelartigen (Gobioidei) nachgewiesen werden.[3] Sie sind deshalb auch nicht mit der Grundelunterfamilie Amblyopinae und der Grundelgattung Gobioides verwandt, die eine sehr ähnliche aalartige Gestalt wie Pholidichthys haben. Der wissenschaftliche Name weist auf Ähnlichkeit (aber nicht Verwandtschaft) mit Pholis aus der Familie der Butterfische hin.
Der amerikanische Ichthyologe Joseph S. Nelson, Autor des Standardwerks zur Fischsystematik Fishes of the World, stellte sie in der vierten Auflage des Werks in die eigene Unterordnung Pholidichthyoidei in die Ordnung der „Barschartigen (Perciformes)“ nachdem sie in der dritten Auflage noch zu den Drachenfischen (Trachinoidei) gezählt wurden.[4]
Im Juli 2012 veröffentlichte eine Gruppe Wissenschaftler eine Studie über die Monophylie der Lippfischartigen (u. a. Lippfische u. Buntbarsche), die sie ablehnen, und kommen zu dem Ergebnis, dass Buntbarsche (Cichlidae), Bewohner tropischer Süßgewässer, die Schwestergruppe der Pholidichthyidae sind. Gemeinsame Merkmale, die Pholidichthys mit den Buntbarschen teilt, sind das einzelne Nasenloch auf jeder Kopfseite, die meisten anderen Fischen haben zwei pro Kopfseite, das paarige Haftorgan auf der Kopfoberseite der Larven, das ihnen dazu dient sich an Gegenständen festzuheften solange sie noch nicht schwimmfähig sind[5], und die intensive Brutpflege, die nicht nur das Gelege, sondern auch Larven und Jungfische umfasst. Letzteres ist für Meeresfische fast einmalig und tritt außer bei Pholidichthys nur noch beim nicht sehr nah verwandten Schwalbenschwanz-Riffbarsch (Acanthochromis polyacanthus)[3][6] und den drei Arten der Riffbarschgattung Altrichthys auf.
Mit den Buntbarschen und anderen Taxa bildet Pholidichthys die Ovalentaria, ein über 4800 Arten umfassendes, morphologisch sehr diverses Großtaxon, das als gemeinsames diagnostisches Merkmal zu Boden sinkende Eier hat, die sich mit klebenden Filamenten anhaften.[5][7][8]

Trong quá khứ người ta cũng từng cho rằng Pholidichthys có quan hệ họ hàng với Microdesmidae, được so sánh với Notograptus hay đặt trong mối quan hệ với Labridae (cá bàng chài).
Springer và Freihofer (1976)[4] đã trình bày chi tiết về bộ xương và hệ thần kinh nhằm làm sáng tỏ các mối quan hệ của Pholidichthys, nhưng chỉ đi tới kết luận rằng nó không có quan hệ họ hàng gần với Blennioidei. Một nghiên cứu của các nhà sinh học phân tử Leo Smith và Matthew Craig năm 2007 cho thấy mối quan hệ họ hàng gần của chi này với Rheocles wrightae (họ Bedotiidae), Calloplesiops altivelis (họ Plesiopidae) và Ptychochromis grandidieri (họ Cichlidae)[5]. Không có mối quan hệ họ hàng gần nào với Gobioidei được phát hiện.[6] Vì thế, Pholidichthys không là họ hàng gần với cả Amblyopinae lẫn Gobioides là những dạng cá bống có hình dáng giống như cá chình, tương tự như hình dáng của Pholidichthys. Tên khoa học có sự tương tự với Pholis thuộc họ Pholidae về mặt từ nguyên học (nhưng không phải mối quan hệ họ hàng).
Nhà ngư học Mỹ Joseph S. Nelson, tác giả công trình hệ thống học cá Fishes of the World, đã đặt chi này trong phân bộ của chính nó là Pholidichthyoidei thuộc bộ Perciformes trong ấn bản lần thứ 4, sau khi tách nó ra khỏi phân bộ Trachinoidei.[7]
Tháng 7 năm 2012 một nhóm các nhà khoa học đã công bố nghiên cứu về tính đơn ngành của nhóm cá Labroidei (bao gồm Labridae và Cichlidae), và nhận thấy tính đa ngành của nhóm này, nhưng phát hiện thấy sự tồn tại của kiểu gộp nhóm gọi là Ovalentaria, trong đó họ hàng gần nhất của Pholidichthyidae là Cichlidae, một họ cá nước ngọt nhiệt đới. Các đặc điểm chung chia sẻ giữa Pholidichthys với Cichlidae là lỗ mũi đơn ở mỗi bên của đầu, trong khi ở phần lớn các nhóm cá khác là 2 lỗ mũi ở phía trước của đầu, cặp đôi cơ quan bám dính ở trên đỉnh đầu ấu trùng để gắn chúng với các vật thể do chúng không nổi.[8], và sự chăm sóc tích cực của cá bố mẹ không chỉ đối với trứng mà còn đối với cả ấu trùng và cá non. Đặc điểm cuối cùng này là gần như duy nhất ở các loài cá biển, ngoài Pholidichthys ra thì chỉ có Acanthochromis polyacanthus là có các tập tính này.[6][9][10]
Cichlidae, Pholidichthys và một số nhóm đơn vị phân loại khác hợp thành Ovalentaria, một nhóm chứa khoảng 4.800 loài cá có hình thái đa dạng mà đặc trưng chẩn đoán chung là trứng chìm, được gắn với các vật thể trong nước bằng các sợi bám dính.[2][8][11]
Có hình dáng giống cá chình, cá trưởng thành dài 24–34 cm. Mỗi bên đầu có một lỗ mũi. Không vảy. Các vây chậu phía dưới hoặc hơi một chút phía trước đáy vây ngực. Một gai yếu trong vây chậu; tia mềm 2 hoặc 3. Vây đuôi hợp cùng vây hậu môn và vây lưng. Tia mềm vây lưng 70-79. Tia mềm vây hậu môn 55-62. Tia vây ngực 15. Các xương họng dưới hợp nhất lại thành một. Khu vực liên hốc mắt với một xương vách ngăn. Đốt sống 71-79[1].
Phân bố trong vùng biển từ tây nam Philippines tới quần đảo Solomon (Pholidichthys leucotaenia) và lãnh thổ Bắc, Australia (Pholidichthys anguis), ở độ sâu từ 3 tới 70 m[1]. Pholidichthys trưởng thành là cá rất nhút nhát. Chúng thường sống trong các đầm phá nông, hang hốc hay trong các khe nứt trong các rạn san hô hoặc trong đáy nền bùn. Chúng có lẽ chủ yếu sống về đêm. Cá non sống thành bầy.
