分布於印度-西太平洋區，包括安達曼海 (普吉島) 、印度-馬來列島、美拉尼西亞的島嶼與東加，北至琉球群島。台灣發現於東部、南部、小琉球、綠島及蘭嶼等地。

小型之雀鯛，無食用價值。有人將其作觀賞魚之用。

體呈橢圓形而側扁，標準體長為體高之2.0-2.4倍。吻短而鈍圓。口中型；頜齒兩列，小而呈圓錐狀。眶下骨具鱗，下緣具鋸齒；前鰓蓋骨後緣具鋸齒。體被櫛鱗；鼻部具鱗；側線之有孔鱗片17-18個。背鰭單一，軟條部不延長而略呈角形，硬棘XIII，軟條14-15；臀鰭硬棘II，軟條14-15；胸鰭鰭條17-18；尾鰭叉形，上下葉末端呈尖狀。體呈灰白至淡藍綠色，腹面淡色；背鰭全黃或後半部黃色；尾鰭黃色；餘鰭淡色；胸鰭基部上緣具一小黑點。

主要棲息於棲息於潟湖、水道與外礁斜坡區。獨居或形成小群魚群生存。以浮游動物為食。
