Pored lateral scale counts from Ref. 1602.Description: Characterized by having blotchy red to reddish brown color; caudal peduncle with white bar; basal portion of caudal fin with red bar; pectoral fin base with blackish arc; posterior part of spinous dorsal fin with black blotch; three spines on suborbital ridge; absence of interorbital or coronal spines; depth of body 2.6-3.0 in SL (Ref. 90102).

體延長,側扁。頭中大,棘稜具明顯的鋸齒狀。眼大,上側位;眼球高達頭背緣;口大,端位,斜裂,上下頜等長。上下頜及鋤骨具細齒,腭骨無齒。鼻棘1個,尖銳。淚骨外側具1稜棘。第一眶下骨及第二眶下骨各具1稜棘。前鰓蓋骨3-4棘;鰓蓋骨具2
棘。下鰓蓋骨及間鰓蓋骨無棘。眼前棘尖且長。眶上稜高凸,具眼上棘與眼後棘各1個。鼓棘1棘。頂棘及頸棘各1個。眼後至側線前端具蝶耳棘2個、翼耳棘1個、後顳顬棘1個及肩胛棘1個;胸鰭基部上方具1脈棘。眼間隔凹入,後方無頂枕窩。前鼻孔具1皮瓣。眼上棘基部具1小皮瓣。鱗中大,櫛鱗。側線上側位,斜直,末端延伸至尾鰭基部。背鰭起始於鰓蓋骨上棘前上方,硬棘與鰭條有鰭膜相連,硬棘部的基底長於軟條部的基底,第四硬棘最長,具硬棘

棲地

主要棲息於潟湖、礁岩平台及礁台之外的外環礁區,水深至200m。具偽裝能力,時常隱藏身體而不容易被發現,藉以守株待兔般快速捕捉過往之小魚與甲殼動物為食。背鰭鰭棘下具毒腺,是海中危險生物。
