Description of Multivalvulida

provided by BioPedia
Myxozoa, spores radially symmetrical, composed of three to seven valves with one polar capsule in each valve, grouped together at apex. Parasites primarily of marine fishes. Many infect skeletal muscle; some cause myoliquefaction. Families in the order Multivalvulida (except Tetractinomyxidae) are separated from each other only by the number of polar capsules; however, separate family designation based on this criterion alone is probably unwarranted, because some species exhibit varying numbers of polar capsules. For example, Septemcapsula yasunagai Hsieh & Chen, 1984 has spores that contain either six or seven polar capsules (Egusa, 1986).
