The very large holes left in this yellow birch are characteristic of the pileated woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus. Maine, 28th November 2008, mixed coastal forest. The identification by Bob Andersen (thanks Bob) is tentative and I would welcome confirmation or correction
I found this reproduction of a work by Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874-1927) some years ago on e-bay. It is from an obscure SUNY publication from 1951, and was published without copyright notice. (Such notice was required for copyright at that time.) As far as I can determine, this work is in the public domain. I have not seen this work reproduced elsewhere. The legend in the original publication notes it is "from a previously unpublished sketch from life by Louis Agassiz Fuertes, 1903...Courtesy of Department of Birds, American Museum of Natural History".It is a very good color half-tone, but has some foxing and a few printing glitches. After descreening and some retouching, I was happy enough with the results to share it.
