Description: Leptopteris moorei is endemic to cloud forest on the Mount Gower plateau and even there is not common. It looks a bit like a large filmy fern, but is in fact in the family Osmundaceae. This family is considered ancient and has only three genera. Leptopteris has only seven species, of which L. superba from New Zealand is the best known. Leptopteris moorei is known as the Transparent Fern on Lord Howe Island, because of the thin-membranous nature of the fronds, which are translucent but not in fact transparent.
