Test free, regular in shape with no excrescences and forming either spherical or ellipsoidal lump or circular disc. Consistency felt-like and surface slightly shaggy. Most species have two types of xenophyae; central part of test contains one kind (primary xenophyae) remainder of the test contains another kind (secondary xenophyae). In all known species secondary xenophyae are siliceous sponge spicules. Occurrence: Indian Ocean, depth range 1158-4730m. Psammetta-like organisms have been photographed at 7665-7710m depth in the New Britain Trench (SW Pacific). Type species Psammetta globosa Schulze, 1906, other species: P. arenocentrum Tendal, 1972; P. ovale Tendal, 1972; P. erythrocy tomorpha Schulze, 1907.
