Euglenids, heterotrophic with mouth visible by light microscopy. The tradition of using the mouth to define this taxon is not supported by current work which demonstrates the presence of a mouth in other groups of heterotrophic euglenids. However, in the absence of an alternative classification, this is what we go with.
