This was a strikingly beautiful, large, red dragonfly that was perched on a dead twig, about a meter above shallowly flowing water. With some reservations, this seems to be a male Western Meadowhawk (Sympetrum occidentale, treated by some as a subspecies within S. semincinctum). Its large size and the fact that its abdomen was not "bright" red are some of the reasons for my reservation about the ID, plus the fact that I wasn't able to get any other shots from different angles to confirm other markings and characteristics.Sept. 18, 2016, along the Green River, Crystal Geyser area, Grand County, Utah, at an elevation of 4,050 ft.
