North American Ecology (US and Canada)

provided by North American Butterfly Knowledge Network
Poanes viator is a year-round resident in the mid-western United States and down the east coast seaboard from Massachusetts to southern Texas, with several separate populations in Nebraska (Scott 1986). Habitats are marshy areas, even roadside sedge patches. Host plants are restricted to several sedge species (Cyperaceae). There are variable numbers of flights each year depending on latitude, in the northern part of the range, there is one flight between July 1-July 31, and there are multiple flights in the southern part of their range between April 15- early Nov. (Scott 1986).
