This is a striking wild apple with red buds and bright flowers. It originates in Japan and Korea.

Malus orientalis is a wild crab apple, closely related to the European M. sylvestris. It belongs to the gene pool form which some of the cultivated apples derive.

The oriental apple is an edible wild crab apple, very close to the European one (Malus sylvestris), and sometimes treated as its subspecies.
