Traditionally Magelonidae has been included with spionid-like Polychaeta, the Spionida. However, molecular data (e.g., review in Weigert & Bleidorn 2016) shows the group does not belong within Spionida, and not within Sedentaria, but rather is 'basal' to most other annelids
