Bromus carinatus is distributed in western North America from Alaska to California and east to Texas. Commonly known as California brome, this grass thrives in a gamut of soils, including poor drainage. It is most often found in moderately moist, well-developed, deep, medium-prefers soils within pH of 5.5 to 8.0. Chief habitats are bottomlands, open slopes, valleys, and ridgetops, up to elevations of 4000 meters..
California brome grows in a tufted manner, and can achieve heights of approximately one meter. The species is thought to be chiefly self-pollinated according to Harlan.
This grass provides a number of important uses in ecosystem services, forage and revegetation functions. It provides food and cover for a wide variety of wildlife, and offers forage species for livestock. This grass has been demonstrated to be very useful in erosion control, revegetation of disturbed areas and for bioswale design to increase percolation.
