Pinus bungeana, native to China. The needles are two to four inches long, somewhat sharp/stiff, not densely clustered, and in bundles of three. Just seeing these, it would not be apparent what an unusual pine tree this is (see previous picture depicting its unique bark).July 12, 2013, Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver, Colorado
Pinus bungeana. Native to northern/central China. Very unusual exfoliating bark and multi-branching habit, particularly for a member of the Pine Family. See the following picture which depicts its more typical looking needles. In fact, the flaky or platy exfoliating bark is reminiscent of trees in the ancient eudicot genus Platanus (Sycamore trees) of the Platanaceae. Possible evolutionary connection?July 12, 2013, Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver, Colorado.
