Siphona geniculata (male) (22226845131)

Image of Siphona geniculata (De Geer 1776)

Description:

Description: This genus is notoriously difficult, though in the UK Siphona geniculata is by far the most common species. In this shot, taken in the garden (Ipswich, VC25 East Suffolk, TM166450) on 19 September, who can just make out the long bent proboscis that is characteristic of the genus. I used keys by Robert Belshaw (1993) and Tschorsnig & Herting (1993, translated from the German by Rotraud Rayner and Chris Raper in 2001) to determine the characteristics needed to narrow down the species, and I tookd photos showing the head profile and detail of the side of the thorax and part of the abdomen which seemed relevant. The photos were confirmed as sufficient for Theo Zeegers (an expert on Tachinids) to confirm that it is indeed S geniculata. See www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=5&thre...
