The generic name, Arctium, comes from the Greek arctos, a bear, from the roughness of the flowerheads. As well as medicinal uses the roots and other parts are edible, see http://www.celtnet.org.uk/recipes/ancient/wild-food-entry.php?term=Burdock and it was also used for an old-fashioned fizzy drink, Dandelion and Burdock. In Midlothian the burrs have a particular function in covering the Burry Man at an annual pagan ceremony, see http://193.62.154.38/celtica/Burryb.htm Seen here on rough ground beside a farm track.
