These fruiting bodies were growing on a piece of wood beside a footpath, and are seen here catching the glancing rays of the low winter sun. The body of the fungus has a firm but jelly-like consistency and appearance. As for scale, the fruiting body to the left was about 4cm across. E. nucleata (Crystal Brain fungus) – 1000447 – is similar, but tends to be more watery in consistency, and often has cream-coloured nodules (of calcium oxalate) embedded in it (hence the "nucleata"); these are not evident here. The two species can only be distinguished with certainty by microscopic examination, but the firm consistency of this fungus, and consideration of the other features just mentioned, make E. thuretiana by far the more probable species. For more on the differences mentioned here, see: http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Exidia_nucleata.html. Date: 11 January 2008. Source: From geograph.org.uk. Author: Lairich Rig.
