Leaves are strap-like (to 60 cm long and 2 cm wide), laterally flattened, soft and hairy. Flowerheads are spikes to 1 m long. Flowers are each subtended by a bract, which almost as long as the flower and becomes reflexed at anthesis. Perianth is yellow, with an outer hairy surface; outer whorl c. 12–15 mm long and 10 mm wide; inner whorl c. 8 mm long and 2 mm wide. Stamens 1. Flowering is from spring to autumn. Widespread on the edges of dams, streams and swamps; in permanently water logged soils and water to about 60 cm deep; mostly coastal. Seeds are buoyant and spread by water. A low to moderate quality feed that is eaten by stock, but not highly sought after. Unconfirmed reports that it may cause poisoning under some circumstances.
