USNM 221086 Equus grevyi Photograph 003
Description:
Left lateral view of catalog number USNM 221086, an Equus grevyi, or Grevy's zebra, skin, from the Mammals Collections at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History. This skin came from a Grevy's zebra stallion that was gifted to President Theodore Roosevelt by Emperor Menelik of Abyssinia. The zebra was installed at the National Zoological Park on November 24, 1904, and lived there until its death on December 4, 1919, at which point its remains were transferred to the National Museum of Natural History Mammals Collections. The Smithsonian Instituion Archives has a photo of this zebra at the zoo in 1904: SIA Acc. 14-167 [NZP-0430].
