Cells solitary, elongate, strongly asymmetric with crescent and spirally twisted cell shape, dorsoventrally flattened; anteriorly rounded, posteriorly tapering; cell wall absent; 2 or 4 flagella, equal or subequal; chloroplast lateral, extending from near the flagellar bases to the cell posterior; pyrenoid absent; eyespot present, located in an anterior lobe of the chloroplast; nucleus anterior; a single Golgi body is located near the posterior end of the nucleus; contractile vacuoles 2, anteriorly located; asexual reproduction by longitudinal division of vegetative flagellate cells, new flagella formed before cytokinesis; spherical cysts known; sexual reproduction unknown; relatively rare, in eutrophic freshwater habitats.
