Juvenile from Michigan.This species--often described as a sphagnum specialist--lays eggs just outside of the water in ephemeral wetlands. Larvae hatch, squirm into the water, then experience one of the shortest larval periods of any salamander before metamorphosing. Still, this young individual was one of last year's youngins.
