These lunkers spend the day prowling the spring just lurking in the shadows. When I'm in the groove, it's not unusual to come across a little group of lunkers here and there, but it's rare that I run into a whole pack of Largemouths, scouring through the grass like a school of Tangs or Bermuda Chub. As soon as one would find any morsels they would swarm down on it so quickly that you never get a chance to see what they're all chomping on.Rainbow River Marion County FloridaOlympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom Gear

A Largemouth Bass is backed into a corner in the shallow water along the bank around the rim of the springhead. I had the opportunity to prowl Gilchrist on three occasions over two weeks. With all the nooks and crannies, I expected to see plenty, but there were surprisingly few fish to photograph. There's ample structure and food sources, with all the vegetation, fallen and floating trees on the fringes of the spring. Hiding under a ledge along the bank, this one stuck with the stare down, and kept squaring off. Apparently, it didn't want to cooperate for a profile shot. This Largemouth might be a little on the slender side, and I don't know if this is some kind of intestinal parasite, artificial blockage or other affliction, but it could still tip the scales as is.Largemouth BassAlexander Springs Recreation AreaOcala National ForestLake County FloridaOlympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom Gear

Lately, it seems like I can't get out of the way of these lunkers. Before this largemouth can grow into one of those lunkers that stirkes fear into the hearts of the sunfish, shiners, and tadpoles, it's got to dodge it's own kind, as well as a few pickerel, and the occasional gar.McCormick SpringsEconfina Creek Canoe TrailNorthwest Florida Water Management District NWFWMDBay County, FloridaOlympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom Gear

Might be a little thin in the mid-section, but this Largemouth is still the biggest I've come across here.According to one article, based on necropsies of affected fish, it may be attributed to swallowing plastic fishing lures.Largemouth BassAlexander Springs Recreation AreaOcala National ForestLake County FloridaOlympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom Gear

With the possible exception of the resident bowfin, and the occasional alligator that ventures into the spring, the larger largemouth bass have the run of the place.Alexander Springs Recreation AreaOcala National ForestLake County FloridaOlympus OM-D E-M514-42mm II LensPT-EP08 Underwater Housing, PPO-EP01 Lens Port & 14-42mm Zoom Gear

Blue Springs is filled with fish, but prime structure can be in high demand, so different species have to learn to coexist. This was taken the day before Hurricane Michael devastated the area, so this whole neighborhood has changed drastically since. A few big bass, and a few monster Tilapia take refuge under a strainer along the bank. The heavy crowds out in the head spring and up and down the run drive everything into hiding. I also found three ball caps wedged under there.
